I've finally gotten some work done on my Boot Bag; I am finished with the main part of the bag and am now deciding how I want to do the straps. The pattern calls for a metal chain to be attached to knitted tabs, but I want to do a totally knitted strap. I'm considering doing a braided i-cord, but haven't gotten the courage to tackle knitting that many inches of i-cord. Makes me wish I had one of those hand-cranked spool knitter things!

I check back periodically to see what is going on. I have been doing a lot of knitting felted bags lately. Working on creating, designing and knitting my own felted bags. I have made a few, in the process of designing my own site to offer the patterns. So, what is everyone else working on? Also, I have knitted 3 pairs of socks and a few bags. I bet we lost a bunch of members when the spamming was going on, but its too bad. I personally plan to knit most of the bags in the book, but must admit that other things (like charity knitting) have been taking most of my knitting time. I also have done some test knitting for a yarn company but have begged off of that to devote more time to my own, and charity, knitting. So I hope to get started soon. I have lots of yarn so don't even have the old shopping excuse. Hope to see others here too.

There is a video on this page showing how to knit this stitch. Apparently it is also called the bramble, blackberry and trinity stitch pattern.

This is an easy, fun stitch pattern and I wish I had known about that video above before starting mine...LOL. This is also the first time using my new Knit Picks Harmony needles, which so far I absolutely love!

I have used this yarn in other projects and I love the color's of the Shetland Chunky Tweeds and the ease at which it knits up. The color shows more red on my pc monitor and it really is a deeper red color.

I decided to use seed stitch instead of garter for the handles. I also purchased cute knitting needles with sheep on the ends with stitch markers to match from an Etsy shop called Designs by Tami. Plus I added my handles a little different than the pattern stated. I spread the stitches out about 10 loops in from the edges and then wrapped the end of the handles around the knitting needle and stitched by hand to attach.

Fair Isle Book Bag Finished

Finally got this sucker lined. I really like it. Found out that when I do the Fair Isle thing that I knit tighter, so lesson learned. I will be making this again! And I took it to school last week (of course I have one week left and my goal was to finish it before school started, but at least I got it before school ended!)

Next up (after the Christmas rush) is the Triangle bag... it will be my first felting experience. Any tips?

Hi ,

I finished the front of the bag and after my holiday party is over and my Christmas gifts are in the mail, I will move on to the lining.

This pattern does not call for reinforcing the handle but I am thinking about how I could. Are people finding that a simple crochet or knit handle is strong enough to support the weight of a full bag? I tend to fill my purse to the max.

linen tube clutch update

Here is an update on the linen clutch. I am 3 inches from finishing the front. I switched back to the old bernat aluminum straight needles and finally seem to have found some kind of rhythm . It is still not speedy knitting . The tip of my left finger is kind of sore from struggling with this double strand ,knit two together in back of stitch pattern, but I soon will be done with the herringbone stitch and on with good old stockinette stitch. The herringbone pattern that this stitch forms is nice so it is probably worth the trouble.
Usually when I complain about a project this much in the end I want to make another one.

I forgot to post a picture of my finished Triangle Bag

I'd forgotten that I haven't posted a photo of the finished Triangle Bag and it is on its way to a new home already. Here it is finished. I added a snap to the inside so there would be a solid closure and sewed this big wooden fish button on the outside to spark it up a bit. I hope the person I've sent it to will like it as much as I do and that she will enjoy using it.

I didn't line the bag because it is a double layer of fabric in most of the bag already where the two pieces are joined and crossed over. This is the first bag I've ever given to someone that I didn't put a lining in and I feel a bit quilty about it but the lining for this bag would strictly be for show (which I enjoy doing), LOL.

linen tube clutch

I have started the linen tube clutch. I purchased the yarn used in the book, Louet Euroflax, in french blue. The yarn does make the bag look grass like but working in the double strand herringbone pattern stitch with this yarn is not easy. The flax does not have the give of most yarns and it also splits easily. I cast on and found after a few rows that I made an error and unraveled to start again, this yarn did not like that either. You can see from my photo that I am not very far on the second try but I thought I would like to post and see if anyone else was knitting this bag. If so, how are they progressing and what yarn are they using ?

I really like this bag and am determined to finish it but this project is slowgoing. I have tried 3 different types of needles, the bamboo needles seem to work best . If Ms. Nussbaum reads this knitalong maybe she can give us some tips on working her herringbone stitch in the Euroflax.

Looking forward to hearing from other Linen clutch knitters.

Good morning everyone!

If you are looking for an easy way to use up sock yarn, check this site out. It is at Mason Dixon Knitting. Just pay attention to the 4" square. Being that I have no sense of what 4" is (my first square ended up 6"), I hacked off the end off a 6"x4" index card and stuck it in my bag. Your gauge can be whatever in order to get a 4" square and then send them off . . . spread the word!

Formal Boot Bag Completed

I'm not sure why I waited so long to finish the handwork on this bag, but it is now finally complete. I think I'll be happy not to have made the entire handle out of chain as the 2 rings connecting bag to handle are quite heavy on their own. Whew! Finally I can claim an FO! :)

Triangle Bag Ready To Be Fullerd

I have the Two Colored Triangle Bag ready for fulling.

The two pieces are knitted and pinned together here. I can already see that I'm going to like this purse.

And here it is after being sewn together, and ready to go into a pillowslip and into wash. I like it as is; would just need a lining.

I'll post the completed project after it is fulled, shaped, and dried. I used Paton's wool for this project.

Completed Knitting Needle Knitting Bag

This was an easy knit if you are paying attention to what row you are on. I had to frog 2 or 3 times because I kept knitting the wrong row. Duh on my behalf!! I used 3 skieins of Cadena Yarn from knitpicks.com; the colors is Mist. I really like the feel of this yarn. I will surely use it again on another bag. The knitting needles in the bag are 12", which are not long enough, the stitches are a tad bunched up. I advise you to get 14" if you are going to knit this bag. I used a bright pink brocade fabric to line the bag. I must say it looks gorgeous. I will let you all be the judge of that. :-) That's my son doing the honors of holding the bag.

Ordering Problems

I just wanted to post to the Canadian's and whoever seems to be having problems getting the Bag Style book. I just replied to Janie's post on Nov. 7. I've had major waiting problems with Amazon.ca with ordering this book. When I saw that Tiffany got her book, and she is in Japan right now, I thought that's enough waiting. So I cancelled my order with Amazon.ca, and thought if I maybe reorder it with them it might re-set to a better delivery date....nope...Jan.2/08 was the new date....So I cancelled, and ordered it from the Amazon.com website on Nov. 4, and it shipped the next day with a eta of Nov.28. It seems like that's still a long wait, but I'm assuming that's due to Canada Post having to deal with an onslaught of online cross-border shopping. Hope this helps! I look forward to eventually posting with a project, and I'm loving all the picture's of everyone's posted projects.

p.s.: It turned out it was even less to order through Amazon.com with our Canadian dollar.

p.s.s.: Update: Just received 'Bag Style' today Nov.13...I ordered it on Nov.3.

Felt Laptop Case

Is anyone else knitting the laptop case? I bought the Cascade 220. I am using Sz 11s to get gauge, but the "fabric" is pretty loosely woven and I am worried that it's not going to be sturdy enough after felting to hold something as heavy as a laptop. Whatcha think? I am going to try to felt my swatch to see what happens.

My Book Won't Arrive from Amazon.ca Until JANUARY

I've cancelled my Amazon order. I'd hoped to have the book in early November to complete some projects as Christmas gifts. Unfortunately, I've received word this morning from Amazon.ca that my book won't ship now until January 9th or 10th. The book is over 30% cheaper online vs. in store - that's why I prefer to shop Amazon. Despite the high Canadian dollar (we're around $1.10 this morning compared to the US dollar), book prices have not been dropping in stores here to reflect this. Call me cheap, but I'm a single parent here. Still, I'm happy to learn that the Scarf Style book and Crochet Jewelry title I'd ordered just after I'd ordered Bag Style should arrive here no later than Friday. :)

Swatching for Formal Boot Bag

Just got my Bag Style book Saturday at Borders (with 30% off coupon, thank you very much!), and have decided to make the Formal Boot Bag. It was really difficult to choose, since I want to make at least nine of the bags in the book. But the cover bag is the one that's calling my name the loudest. I'm planning on using some Patons Classic Wool in red that I already have in the stash. Well, I'm off to swatch...

FO - Two-tone tote

Finished the two-tone tote a few weeks ago, but have only just taken a photo. It's not as deep as I expected, so I might add a couple of snap closures at the top (to stop things falling out!), but otherwise I love it. Easy to knit, and the felting was so much fun!

Density of Triangle Bag

Heavens, my wonderful SP-11 partner sent me the Bag Styles book, two days late I received a copy from Amazon. That's okay, it just means that some lucky person down the road, will receive my copy as a treat.

I love most of the bags in the book but the Triangle Bag really caught my eye. I do have some concerns that the fabric won't have the thickness that I like with it being knit with only one strand of yarn. I know the size 6 needles makes up some of it. I'm tempted to knit it using a larger needle and two strands. Has anyone tried that ? I will take Charlene's advice and double the yarn for the I-cord handles.

I plan to cast-on tonight while I'm at a breathing point in my knitting.

I really am enjoying all the beautiful workings everyone is sharing. I'm currently completing other bags. I have finished one, working on two now and about to start on the third. I have loved working with this pattern from the very first! The Patons wool tweed is awesome and felted up better than I ever anticipated. Here is the bag in its drying stage and the front panel half finished. Not sure about the strap being a chain on this one tho. Any ideas???? This bag WILL get made again!

Surface-Woven Tote progress

So I'm not as fast as a number of you guys, but I've completed the front and back and now I'm about 8 inches into the 50" sides/bottom piece. Love the yarn, nice and fast on 13s. I think I'll line it with some vintage print fabric. Excited about looking for it! ...but I'm not too keen on sewing.

Have yet to cast on for the Linen Tube Clutch.

Yes I'm in northern Canada, but not too north. I just wanted to say I'm new to the KAL, and enjoying reading the posts on the blog. All the projects are looking great, and I can hardly wait until I get my book. Unfortunately it seems like I'm going to have to wait for the book until some time in November. I ordered mine from Amazon.ca on October 9 with an est. delivery of Nov.7-12. I noticed in the new Interweave Knits Holiday Gifts 2007 issue that it also says the Bag Style book will be available November 2007. So how is everyone getting their books? I'd be interested in finding out if anyone else is experiencing this.

Well, I'm sorry for the delay in getting this FO posted. I've spent most of my free time lately with a paint brush in my hands. And I've had no opportunity to get a modeled photog. I finally took this one before I crawled in bed last night just so you would have one. So without further ado.....the Two Tone Triangle.........

(I tried to add scale with the shoe and hand since it wasn't being modeled.)

As I shared before, I used Cascade 220 yarn for this project. I've used it before and it felts up wonderfully. One thing that would probably change is the handle.....either double the yarn or use more than 3 stitches for the I-cord. It just doesn't feel or look like it's going to be strong enough.

Another thing I would change is how I sewed it together. I had this pinned together two or three different ways, but I was trying to have more red show so I failed to notice that I had the pointier sides facing out instead of in. Please note that on the instructions they fail to tell you which side (edge) to place where.

All in all, I still like this pattern, however I'm not really loving this (my) particular version of it. I'm likely to do this one again and be much happier with the results. So take my advice when you do this one, watch your placement of the sides together, be sure your handles are thick enough and you'll have a great purse!!

Fair Isle Book Bag Yarn Bought

Well, my savaging through kanji came up with some success. I found some good yarn (pretty cheap too... about 300 yen for a 50 gram skein [I've only seen 50 g balls here]). Grabbed a few balls and came home to my computer to check on this website and saw that I did get the right thickness of yarn, yet I got acrylic (which is okay). I'm learning... I'll be learning more soon because I just enrolled in a Japanese course at the university here. I'm excited! A great project to keep my school books in! I've already cast on and finished the bottom!

Thank goodness my book finally arrived on Saturday and I am trying sooo hard to decide which to start first. Well, then of course, I just took the UFO poll from the Knitting Daily email today . . .

Hm, feeling only a little guilty, enough to not go buy new yarn, but to figure out which bag I can make with the yarn from my stash. That's responsible, right? I'm thinking perhaps the Fair Isle Book Bag or the Knitting Needle Bag. So many choices, so little time.

Hooray! I have my book now! And now to choose. I agree with the whole "bag lady" theory.
I think I'll start off with my first Fair Isle project with the Fair Isle Book Bag. Now to find the right yarn in Japanese...
I'm just glad they give the weight of yarn you should use and then let you go from there on the type of yarn. Helps my beginner-ness of things....

Linen Tube Clutch AND Surface-Woven Tote

I did it. Just got back from the LYS with yarn for both projects. Oh boy. My intent was just to buy for the clutch but I love love LOVE the Nashua wool colors!

The Nashua cotton is a nice mild variegated yellow called Acacia. It doesn't have the sheen that the pattern yarn calls for but eh. I guess there's the difference - beautiful color combo for the tote but the clutch should be an impressive FO. Starting at least one tonight!

Knitting Needle Bag

Everyone is doing so nice with their Bag projects. I have started the Knitting Needle Bag twice and had to take it out. I keep missing a row. I don't know what is wrong with me. I really need to write the numbers down and cross them out or use a row counter. I usually don't have these problems. First time for everything. So, anyone else having any blunders?

First Bag Style KAL Bag Completed!

Here is my completed Knitting Needle Knitting Bag. It was a quick, easy knit, and the knitting needle handles really make it unique (except that all of you will have one too of course!) I found the lining material in my stash left over from my sewing days - before I developed OCKS (obsessive compulsive knitting syndrome). I would make more of these -great gifts for knitters - in different patterns. Maybe a cable pattern, or even just plain garter in a multi-colored yarn. I'm still waiting for my book from Amazon so who knows how many of these I'll have made before it arrives!

Penny Bag

Has anyone tried to make the Penny Bag? It seems like a lot of extra work to knit the front pattern then the bottom and then reverse the pattern up the back? Is there a reason for this? would knitting it in the round change everything? This is my first knit along and some of these patterns seem less clear to me?? Thanks!

I joined this KAL because I love the look of the bags and also because I thought I could fit it in once I finished some other KALs (but is anyone ever really done???).
I ordered the book through Amazon and right now it is flying (or riding in a big brown truck) on its way to my home.
I can't believe how fast everyone is knitting up their bags - they look fantastic!
I'm curious to see what I will choose once I have the book in hand.

I think I will start with the Hemp Market Bag, since I have some of the very yarn used in the book. Anyway, I think it is, since I am frogging it from a UFO and the label is long gone. I think I have all those different needle sizes, but doubt if the exact sizes are strictly necessary anyway. Wish me luck.

I have looked at the book 10 times and finally I've decided on the Formal Boot Bag. I really like the front of the bag and looking through the pattern it should be fun to make. I just have to decide what color, and do I want to do any adding of contrasting colors. Maybe on the front panel? I'm not sure. What do you guys think?

Construction zone.........

Well, it's begun. I have the Two-Tone Triangle purse sewn together as you can see. I did actually try putting this together a couple of different ways. The instructions don't give you a specific which side is outer edge and which is inner although this shape is fine with me. I didn't want a particularly large opening at the top, but I did try to match the picture as best as I could. Pre-felting size was 21 1/4 inches across the bottom and 16 1/2 inches from bottom to top point (excluding handles). It's been felted and I'm surprised a bit that it didn't come out smaller, but the post-felting size is 19 3/4 inches across the bottom and 12 1/4 inches from bottom to top point. It's blocking now, so when all is done I'll show the the finished version.

Wild Lining for Bag

I meant to post the inside of my bag - I just used something I found in my sewing cabinet. But it's bright and I really love how it makes the bag itself much sturdier. I had to put my label in it so I would remember I'm the one who made it. I have senior moments. :)

Some Assembly Is Required

I've reached that point you often find in instructions where 'some assembly is required'. As you can see, I've done both halves, and I went with red for the second half.

Both of these yarns are Cascade 220, one is Heather and the other is Quatro. I used the needle specified in the instructions, however, I did get more stitches to the inch than they did. I could have gone up in needle size, but I actually like a smaller size purse, so I think this will be just fine. It's been pretty easy project so far, easy to knit. I'll keep you posted on my progress in the next phase and will try to show it to you before the 'big plunge'.

Linen Tube Clutch

Okay, I finally picked out the first bag I want to knit - The Linen Tube Clutch. It was a toss-up with the Zenith Carpet Bag, but the pattern and construction don't fully make sense yet (1 3/4" from CO?). I've marked 7 other patterns to knit with mods. Lots of great bags in the book! Alas, I won't be able to get to my LYS until at least Wednesday.

Two-Tone Triangle Purse

I am another one who is looking forward to making the two-tone triangle purse. In fact, I've already bought two different sets of yarn for it! I am hoping to start later today, as I've just finished up two other projects, and feel entitled to start a new one! It will probably be the Cadet Blue and Lemongrass one (the Lion Brand Wool). I've become entranced with this Lemongrass color, although normally I am a blue and purple and teal-loving person.

Two Tone Triangle Started

My book arrived Monday, then there was a trip to the LYS on Tuesday and finally getting started on Wednesday. I fell in love the the Two Tone Triangle bag when I first saw it, so it moved to the top of the list on 'must-dos'. Hardest part so far was simply trying to decide what colors I wanted to do it in. The first side is in a Cascade 220 Heather - Purple - - - the other side, well, it's between a red or a blue. We'll see...........

Stopped by my LYS after work today and picked up the book. (they had a bunch) I'm anxious to start but I'm having trouble deciding which one I want to knit. Linen Clutch, Messenger Bag... I don't know! Oh yeah, I want to finish up some other projects first.

Like so many others here, I couldn't resist this (my first) KAL. I've chosen the Fair Isle Book Bag using Elsebeth Lavold Chunky Al. With so many UFOs, what am I thinking? Notions: marker, tapesry needle, size f crochet hook ,needlepoint canvas enough for a 10 1/2 x 13 1/2 piece and two 5 inch circles

I can't wait to see one of these done up. I love this bag.

Many thanks to all the folks at Knitting Daily who have given all of us without books yet, a sneak peak pattern for the Knitting Bag! Too many UFO's around, but needed to start this bag so I'd look really cool when going out for coffee. Anyone with me on that one? :) I'm half done, found #15 bamboos still in their package in my secretest of stashes. Glad to get some good hints about lining this bag, too. I haven't got the book yet. It's on order with Amazon. But I'm starting out with the Knitting Needle Bag. A friend picked up the bamboo needles from the mall at AC Moore's for 40% off for me ... so that was a bargain. I picked up yarn yesterday at my LYS and got "ggh Savanna" ... it's bulky weigh, but because of the yardage, I had to get 4 skeins instead of 3. I think I'm going to really love the look of this yarn tho. Now I can't wait to get started. But first ... I need to finished three other UFO's. Well this weekend ... the bag begins.

I don't have my book yet, but I'm taking advantage of the preview from knittingdaily for the knitting needle knitting bag and getting started on the KAL. I couldn't wait to order the yarn called for, so I grabbed some from my stash - no label on it, but I think it's Galway Bulky. I don't think the gauge is too critical so I'm not worried about it. The yarn is actually a lighter green than it is showing up in the picture. Can't wait to get my book - I really want to make the bag on the cover.

I got my book yesterday from Barnes and Noble, there are some interesting handbags in the book. I also like the bag on the front. I am no too crazy over the YO-YO Hobo bag, The lace Doily purse is interesting but I don't think it looks right as a handbag. I like the front but the bag looks too heavy or a knit for a bag. May just be me!

What is the name of the bag on the cover? I want to make that one first. I hope my book comes early. Can someone tell me the supplies I would need to knit, that bag. I would greatly appreciate it. I'm waiting on my yarn to arrive!!! I am going to start with the Knitting Kneedle Knitting Bag, but I'm doing it in purple. I ordered some Cadena (70% Peruvian Highland Wool, 30% Superfine Alpaca) from Knit Picks for it. I purchased some cheaper wooden needles at my LYS for the ones that glued into the bag. Sure wish that yarn would get here so I can get started!!!

For the Market Bag they used Lanaknits Hemp for Knitting allhemp6 (100% hemp; 165 yards) 2 skeins. This is a DK weight yarn. Hope this helps Jen!

Blah! I tried to purchase the book locally today and the stores I tried don't have it yet. I'll have to try the smaller ones tomorrow and see what I can find. Just in case, can any of you lucky ducks with the book already tell me how much yarn I will need for the market bag? I think I would like to start there and may just order the yarn and the book all online tomorrow if I can't find the book in town. Thanks. Hope to be knitting a bag soon!

How to k1, p1, k1

Well, I have the book!!!!! I'm trying to be good and am using yarn I already have. I'm using Lamb's Pride bulky. I'm trying to k1,p1,k1 in one one stitch. I've searched the web for a video of how to and can't find one. I'm going to keep practicing, but in the meantime, can anyone out there give me a clue?
The book is dreamy and full of great bags. I did buy some yarn. I'm making the Tow Tone Triangle purse, and am using Ella Rae, #18 chartreuse and 38, burgundy and plan on making i cord to create swirls. also making a key hole felted scarf in both colors and i cord swirls. I'm thinking of closing the purse w/some sort of toggle. It's for a friend of mine who lives in the dessert. I hope she loves it!!!
Hope to hear from other knitters about this book. Will post a pic as soon as I can. I'm so excited. This is my first time blogging.

Hello All. I'm so excited that this will be my first KAL. I'm waiting for my book to arrive and keep looking back at the photos of the bags trying to decide which to start first. I'm famous for starting and not finishing. Sure I'm not the only one who does that . . . I just realized too that I've never taken photos of my knitting projects. What have I been thinking. Guess I'll have to take care of that this weekend. I've already made two Christmas gifts and I may have to revise my list to include some bags. Hm. . .

I was so excited to get this book early. I thought we would be waiting untill november. What a great surprise. I started Lace doily purse on page 61. I had a little trouble at first because the direction are worded funny but I figured it out and finished the handle now I'm starting on the front.

I have yarn for the Celtic weekend tote on page 85. My favorite bag is the knitting needle knitting bag but I haven't found a good yarn sub for that one.

I can't wait to see all the bags everyone makes.

I'm so excited about this book. And gosh darn it, I've yet to find an English bookstore over here. So I ordered mine too (along with Lace Style... great minds think alike) and I'm anxiously awaiting that shipment across the ocean.

For those of you who don't know, I'm currently living in Japan near Tokyo. My husband is in the Air Force and we are stationed at Yokota AB. It's super exciting (especially when you find really nice bamboo needles for 100 yen and Noro yarn for 40% off listed price, which is already way below the cost in the states).

So until then, I'll just keep changing my mind of which bag to start first.

I ordered my book thru Amazon, and it is supposed to ship on Oct 1. Saturday, sure it is. Anyway, I ordered it and Lace Style together to get free shipping and now my thrift means it will take even longer to get here. In the meantime I will just have to drool on the pix of everybody's projects.

I have a profound love for knitting and felting bags. I do not like lining them, that is a problem. So, I have all these bags here that needs to be lined and the fasteners attached. However, I can not wait until I receive my book and get started on a bag from the the Bag Style Book. I know crazy, but I love to knit. Wow! Hi, everyone! This is my first official KAL and I'm really looking forward to it. Can't wait to receive my book from Amazon and get started in November. We have sheep of our own (Columbia & Corriedale/CVM) and produce roving and wool yarn. Learning to knit just seemed like a perfect progression from having produced our farm's own products - and now here I am. My friends told me that I would really get hooked on knitting - boy were they right... Thanks so much!!

Hi there!

I'm Mary Lynn (from Cleveland) and learned about this KAL from Jane's blog. I so very much enjoy knitting bags and felting and I have been friends for a long, long time (originally, it was unintentional . . . and I have the sweaters to prove it!). I have pre-ordered the book from Amazon.

Looking at the slide show of the bags in this book, I have to say that for almost all of them I was saying "oh, I'll do this one first. No, this one. No, maybe this one."
